Perhaps they are "theists" who try to reconcile evolutionary theory with the existence of God. I've never "googled" theistic evolutionist, but it might be interesting to see how cyberspace defines the term. Interesting point made by patricknj.
Who gets to make those definitions? Is their an organiztion of Theistic Evolutionists? Are the all Christian Theistic Evolutionists. How about Islamic Theistic Evolutionists. Are the different from people who accept evolution as provisionally true and happen to be religious?
Theistic evolutionists have multiple ways of attempting to make Genesis square with evolution. On the more drastic side, we see those who regard the earliest chapters of the Bible as fables which, although "theologically instructive," are not meant to be thought of as historical (or even literal). On another hand, we have those who try to take the text literally (or as literally as possible), but give it some sort of interpretive twist. I have yet to see a TE interpretation of Genesis that resolves all the issues that @S.M.S posted, however.
I disagree...By definition, a theistic evolutionist would be a person who attempts to coherently combine their belief in God (and the Bible) with their belief in evolution. There are a number of difficulties with this view, as we have already discussed in this and other threads.
That is a very interesting and useful list for understanding how evolution and the creation account do not go together. I am wondering, how does some one who believes both evolution and the Bible reconcile these differences?
It seems to me that the evolutionary timeline contradicts itself let alone the Bible. For example, a trail of tiny tracks in Uruguay’s Tacuarí Formation has evolutionary theorists scratching their heads to sort out the rate of evolution of early complex life-forms. Two geologists have traced the trails left by a slug-like creature back to a time before such bilaterally symmetrical creatures should have been crawling around. How can this be? The evolutionary timeline simply doesn't allow it.
From a biblical perspective, however, these findings make sense. God created all kinds of living things—both simple and complex. The fossil record preserves a record of the order in which many creatures were buried—many of them during the global Flood—not the record of their evolutionary emergence. The fossil record preserves many distinct kinds of organisms, but it does not demonstrate evolution of simple kinds of organisms into more complex ones. Thus, the presence of preserved tracks in rock layes that are dated inconveniently early for evolutionists (thus disrupting their evolutionary timeline) is no problem for creationists as those tracks are simply a remarkably preserved record of the fact these creatures lived, not of their evolutionary emergence on earth’s presumed evolutionary tree of life.
I would say that the order of events recorded in God's Word definitely contradicts the evolutionary timeline. And, as you can see, these items are irreconcilable. This is just a short comparison between the evolutionary timeline and the order of events as God describes them in His Word.
